How to Size Barefoot Shoes
| Step |
What to Do |
Why It Matters |
| 1. Measure foot length |
Stand on paper, heel to longest toe, in the afternoon |
Feet swell during the day and after activity |
| 2. Measure foot width |
Measure across the widest part of the forefoot, at the ball of the foot |
Wide toe box is the core of barefoot fit |
| 3. Add toe room |
Add 0.2–0.4 in (5–10 mm) to foot length for shoe internal length |
Toes need room to spread and push off naturally |
| 4. Check width |
Choose the size whose internal width is at least your foot width + 0.1–0.2 in |
Prevents toe squeeze and pressure points |
| 5. Zero drop |
No heel lift; heel and toe sit at the same height |
Encourages natural posture and calf/foot loading |

* All measurements are foot measurements, not shoe flat measurements. Measure both feet and use the larger foot.
* Barefoot shoes are designed with a wide toe box and zero drop. The internal width should be at least your foot width plus 0.1–0.2 in (3–5 mm) so toes can spread.
* Add 0.2–0.4 in (5–10 mm) of toe room to your foot length. For hiking and long-distance walking, 0.4 in (10 mm) is recommended for downhill toe clearance.
* If you are between sizes, size up. A slightly larger barefoot shoe is safer than a tight one, especially for beginners transitioning from cushioned shoes.
* Transition gradually: start with 1–2 hours per day and increase over 2–4 weeks to allow feet and calves to adapt to zero drop.
* Wide feet: choose the size that matches your foot width first, then check length. Do not size up only for width if the length becomes too long.
* Kids' barefoot shoes: leave 0.3–0.4 in (8–10 mm) of growth room, but check that the heel is secure and the child can walk without tripping.
* Socks: toe socks and thin barefoot socks should fit snugly without bunching. Match by shoe size and foot length.
* Actual fit may vary by style, upper material, and removable insole thickness. Follow product page notes for specific fit guidance.
